Throughout the years, we built our expertise on understanding and selecting the finest, sustainable ingredients from around the world. All to create extremely balanced blends of Swiss chocolate. We pick the purest milk and grind the cacao in small batches. We learned to master the Swiss conching tradition for every one of our couverture recipes.

History of Carma

In 1931, our founding father Carl Maentler took his first steps to create high-quality Swiss-made ingredients for pastry chefs, bakers and chocolatiers. In the nine decades since, we have been recognised, locally and globally, for delivering extraordinary chocolate that fosters the ambition of artisans to create memorably smooth chocolate.

1931

The entrepreneurial spirit of Carma Maentler founded Carma in Zürich, where the founder’s flat was used as the company’s office and production plant.

10 years later Maentler relocated to Dübendorf, where our production facilities are still based to this day.

1965

Two iconic couvertures: Dark Bourbon 50 % and Milk Des Alpes 35 % are introduced to the chocolate market.

2006

Mooh milk supply

Mooh ensures the distribution of its producers’ milk in a sustainable manner. This is possible thanks to its long-standing partnership with Swiss dairy and cheese factories, the good quality of their milk and customeroriented transport logistics.

By offering a variety of different types of milk – ÖLN (ecological performance certificate), organic, mountain and cheesemaking milk – as well as other milk specialities – we are able to meet the demand of milk processors and thus that of consumers for different milk products.

We want to source the most sustainable milk ever – exclusively from Swiss farmers. All of our suppliers need to comply with our strict sustainability guidelines called VisionDairy, where protecting our environment lies close to our hearts.

To protect our shared environment, we decided to partner with Mooh and 5 Swiss farmers (from 2 regions in Switzerland: Säntis and Thurgau) with a mission to reduce CO2 emissions in Swiss milk production.

With the following results:

Carma set a new standard for CO2 reductions in the dairy production industry through scientifically-proven, natural feed additives.

Over 2 millions kg of sustainable milk used to produce Carma chocolates in 2020.

In 2020, our Farmers owned 267 cows and 46 calves & purchased over 5.800 kg of Agolin.

All Carma couvertures are produced in our factory in Duebendorf, Switzerland, using only Swiss sugar and Swiss milk.

As a truly global brand we offer halal and kosher dairy-certified chocolate.

Certification that puts the focus on our cocoa farmers’ prosperity and that helps them build self-sustaining farming communities that protect nature and their children. The Cocoa Horizons Foundation is an independent, non-profit organization supervised by the Swiss Federal Foundation Supervisory Authority. It was established in 2015 by Barry Callebaut.
